The government gave out money for education which was used to pay teachers, straight and resourceful schools and the necessary textbooks. A government school was one which had been either set up by the government or was an acceptable school which was given money from the government to continue to educate children. The majority of the church-run schools were not in this system, and stayed that way well into the 1900s.
